Because a good majority of my day is usually spent getting on or off a mat, I wear sandals a lot, doesn’t matter the weather, I’ve worn them in snowstorms, below freezing weather, whenever. This past Saturday, after training, We had an instructor’s meeting at our favorite hangout, Smiler’s Bar and Grille in Dickson City and I was rockin the sandals
During the meeting, someone knocked over a drink breaking a glass and ultimately spilling its contents all over my opened toed foot. On our way out of the bar, I said to my friends “guys, I think my feet are Drunk “ to which they asked “how can you tell?” I said “because they just tried to walk”
Of course my friends laughed, but you would be surprised just how many times I make a joke like that and the person will try to stifle a laugh, or give me an “awww” or something like that. Someone once asked me “How can you be so relaxed, and joke so much about something as serious as your disability?”
The short answer? “What other choice do I have?” I’m a big Johnny Cash Fan and if you guys aren’t familiar with the song “Boy named Sue” it’s about a boy whose Dad leaves his mom but before he does he names his son “Sue” so the boy grows up and spends his life trying to find his father and get revenge for being saddled with a girl’s name. Finally, when he finds his dad, they brawl and he when he asks him why he gave him such a terrible name the father says ‘cause I knew you’d either get tough or die”
Having a disability is really the same thing. You can either accept the hand that you’re dealt and play it to the best of your abilities or you can die. That might sound really harsh, but that’s the reality.
Would I choose this life if I had the opportunity? Even though I’ve done some really awesome stuff,No. probably not. I don’t think you would meet a person anywhere that when choosing their ideal life would say “you know what would be really great? If I didn’t have the ability to walk” but that can’t happen. We can’t choose or predict the obstacles that God has placed or will place in front of us. What we can do is pick the path we take to get around the obstacles.
I happen to choose humor and hard work? What path will you choose?
